Cpl. Juan M. Rodriguez, military dog handler with 1st Law Enforcement Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force, kneels next to Lucca, a 8-year-old Belgian Malinois military working dog, next to the battalion's dog kennel at Camp Pendleton, Calif., July 2. Lucca deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan where she was injured by an improvised explosive device. The injury led to the amputation of her left front leg and retirement from military service. Rodriguez, Lucca's current handler, is scheduled to escort the veteran K-9 from the base to Finland where she will reside with Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Willingham, Lucca's original trainer. During a turnover at O-Hare International Airport in Chicago, Ill., Lucca will be honored during a ceremony by American Airlines, which will provide transportation to Rodriguez and Lucca through its partnership with Air Compassion for Veterans. ACV is an organization that provides medically related air transport services to service members, veterans and their families. During her military service, Lucca uncovered more than 40 IEDs and saved countless lives.

Honoring Service – The Dickin Medal

Men and women who perform valiantly in the face of the enemy are not the only military personnel who should be awarded for their courage. AMVETS

AMVETS has a proud history of assisting veterans and sponsoring numerous programs that serve our country and its citizens. The helping hand that AMVETS extends to veterans and their families takes many forms.

One of the most visible is our network of trained national service officers (NSOs) accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Funded by the AMVETS National Service Foundation, these dedicated men and women can be found in close to 40 states, providing sound advice and prompt action on compensation claims at no charge to the veteran.

In one recent year alone, AMVETS national service officers processed more than 24,000 claims that resulted in veterans receiving some $400 million in compensation. This commitment to service traces its roots back to 1948, when our NSOs first began helping veterans of World War II to obtain the benefits promised them by the federal government.

    Fisher House Foundation

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

Each year they collect and distribute toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children from where these Marines and veterans live and work. Last year, for the 65th year, in 745 communities nationwide, Toys for Tots offered 6.7 million children recognition, confidence and lifelong positive memories – all qualities that may motivate them to become responsible and caring members of their communities.
