Donation FAQs – Donate Your Car

What are the benefits of donating my vehicle to vets vehicles?

When you donate a car to Vets Vehicles, the proceeds go toward helping veterans, their families, and your community in many different ways. Vets Vehicles converts cars and other vehicles into cash, which is donated to charities that provide veterans and their families resources that they may not otherwise have, including scholarship, temporary housing (for the families of injured soldiers), or financial aid for those who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.

Not only that, the process is as simple as filling out some paperwork. We do the rest. And it’s tax deductible!

Am i donating my car directly to charity?

Yes. When you donate a car to Vets Vehicles you are donating directly to an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charity.

How much will my tax write-off be?

Because you are donating your car to support veterans in need, you are entitled to a tax deduction equal to the car's sales price, if you itemize your deductions. If your car sold for less than $500, you may deduct the fair market value up to $500. A receipt, or 1098C form, will be mailed to you within 30 days of the car's sale to determine your available deduction.

How is the value of my car determined?

The value of your car is determined by the price that the vehicle can reasonably be sold for. A good estimate of this price can be found in guides such as the Kelley Blue Book. Overall, the value of your car is determined by its year, make, model, and condition.

How much money will go to veterans?

Vets Vehicles and V-DAC (Vehicle Donations to Any Charity) search high and low to make sure that we give the most money to veterans’ organizations as possible. We take only the cost of towing, auction, and processing out of the price, initially. From those proceeds, on average, 78% (never less than 70%) goes to the veterans’ nonprofit charity.

How long before the charities get the money?

Since we are serious about selling your car for the best possible price, it can take up to two months to make a sale. After that time the proceeds are usually delivered to the veteran’s charity within two weeks.

How much work is it for me?

All you have to do is fill out our vehicle donation form online or call 1-888-838-7834 to give your car's information, find your vehicle identification number (VIN), fill out a few forms, and mail in the form. We will contact you to locate the car and a convenient time for it to be picked up. You don’t even have to be there when we pick it up.

How long until my vehicle is picked-up?

Newer cars are picked up right away. For older cars it only takes a few days for us to pick it up. If you need to arrange a special pick up (especially for large or unusual vehicles like farming equipment, boats, planes, etc.) then call 1-888-838-7834 and let them know. Learn more about our “Quick Pick-Up” service here.

Do you accept all vehicles?

We accept all types of vehicles. It doesn’t matter if they’re for land, sea, or air; we can pick them up and transport them. The only exception we make is that the value of the car has to be equal or greater than the cost of transport. If you have questions about the transport of your vehicle, you can call us at 1-888-838-7834.

Since Vets Vehicles is simply selling the car for cash donation, the vehicle doesn’t necessarily have to run well, or at all. If the car can have parts stripped and salvaged for money, then we will sell them and donate your money to veterans’ charities.

What if i have title issues?

If you are unable to produce the title for any reason, call us at 1-888-838-7834. Our donation specialists work with DMVs across the country and can solve any issue you may have about your proof of ownership.

Is there any cost?

There is absolutely no cost to you. Any business expense that we need to take care of comes from the vehicle itself. If the cost of business exceeds the value of your vehicle the difference will never come out of your pocket.

Not only is there no financial cost to you, you have to do little to no work to donate your car to veterans’ charities.
